Today we will be talking about a trending topic that took over the Natural Hair community this past summer…Dawn Dish Soap (as a shampoo)
Yes, you hear me right Dawn Dish Soap.
Ever heard of this trend? Well, this past summer the natural hair community was in a frenzy with many people hyping up this trend of using the dish soap (specifically the blue one with the little ducks on the front) to clean their hair. I’m not sure about you guys, but personally I feel a little conflicted. After spiraling down a rabbit hole of videos about this topic, and assuring myself that this was okay because it was for the sake of research, I was truly amazed at the brave souls who took on this challenge.
Because, knowing myself, I don’t think I would ever use something that is meant for washing dishes on my hair. Aren’t there harsh chemicals in that stuff ? Won’t it make your hair fall out ? Well folks…apparently not. Let’s take a closer look at this trend and see what the word really is with Dawn Dish Soap.
Why Dish Soap ?
So basically, people are using this Dawn Dish soap as sort of a clarifying wash for their hair. Meaning, to detox your hair without stripping it of all of its moisture and colour. I guess this is where Dawn Dish Soap comes in. Dish soap in general is designed to get rid of grease and oil. So in theory, this soap should work for your detoxifying needs.
Technically, Dawn Dish soap is safe to use, i’m sure we’ve all seen the commercial with the little duckling covered in oil. So long as you aren’t ingesting it, or getting it in your eyes you should be okay. Youtubers insist that you must use the Blue version of Dawn Soap, the original scent version for desired results and safety.
Does it work for Natural Hair?
So the thing about Dawn Dish soap is that it strips the hair of oils. And for people with type 4c hair, they need oil because all of its bends make it harder for the sebum to coat it. With that being said, Dish soap doesn’t seem like the best option for natural hair. It could make your curls prone to breakage. Also, the ingredients aren’t natural, using plant-based natural ingredients in your hair is one of the best things you can do.
How We Feelin’ ?
Personally, I tried my hardest to give this trend a try for this weekly review. But after taking a long and hard look at the dish soap sitting on my kitchen counter whilst simulateously imagining my hair falling out and having to invest in beanie hats and baseball caps for the next 5 months, I decided to sit this one out.
Although I am a skeptic that using dish soap in my hair could be a replacement for my coveted Aussie Moisture shampoo, I don’t think this trend should be a complete write off. From what I have watched on youtube and read on the world wide web, the Dawn Dish soap has worked for many people. It can supposedly remove build up and get a really good deep clean for your hair, but I would be wary of using this too often because of the chemicals/irritants in dish soap.
